Three Years in Review

Part 1

From 2014 thru 2017, I managed a project/study that was very close to my heart.  I was blessed and lucky to be given the opportunity and I learned so much - too much to list here. There were successes and failures, stumbles and moments of perfection. At the end of it all, the study was completed and the outcome looks bright (so I'm told). I am very proud of my work, our consultant team, the CRO team(s) and all the vendors who in any small way assisted the company in the endeavor.  I was poised at the end of study enrollment to look forward to the 'what's next'.

Except there was to be no what's next - instead my position was eliminated and I found myself out of work, with HERE WE GO AGAIN echoing in my head. This is the fourth time this industry has taken everything I offered it and without so much as a by your leave, shoved me out the door when they were finished.

Of course it all comes back to money (and data); companies can't get funding and go bankrupt and close or have to streamline themselves thinner than a sheet of paper; some get bought out and people get a fat severance as they dance out the door, but that's rare.  It is the nature of the startup beast and I understand that (obviously since I keep going back to start ups) it just doesn't make it any easier, you know?

I don't blame anyone, it is what it is and honestly – partly my fault if I keep going back to these situations.  However, I feel unappreciated (and I think it is ok to feel that way); I have worked from home, first in a tiny apartment packed so full of study supplies that I couldn't get to my couch, then in my little office with no sunshine and lots of children screaming (day care next door). I have taken conference calls in my car while driving back from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania; I left my partner the day after he came home from the hospital with a compound fracture that required surgery (and was not weight baring) to fly to Chicago for an overnight meeting, leaving him with a stranger neither of us had met to attend to his needs. I answered calls on days off and vacations; I have been repeatedly emailed by shareholders demanding information that legally I could not (and did not) provide them.  I was also stalked by shareholders reading blogs on this website and discussing them on company financial message boards as if my posts were oracles projecting the future! I have done everything I was asked to do and more to make the project a success and I believe it is a success! But that isn't much of a salve on the disappointment.

I won't lie - I could see this situation heading my way on the horizon.  As a person who fights anxiety and depression on a daily basis, this just pushed me over the edge. I still worked and got things done and I am proud to say that I still met my timelines (except when they superseded each other) but my quality of life was gone. I didn't want to leave the house. I would take Gav to the grocery store and he would do the shopping while I stayed in the car (he is a great shopper). We had a lot of delivery meals (pizza or Chinese - those were our only choices in Schuylkill Haven). I started becoming agoraphobic; I would make plans to attend functions, but when the day arrived, I no longer wanted to go and I either made an excuse so I didn't have to attend or I had to force myself to go.  I spent hours staring at the television or out the window, my mind elsewhere or nowhere.

Finally, I sucked it up and drove the 80 miles to my doctor and got a medication change which didn't help so we went through a series of medication changes (luckily over the phone) until we arrived at what worked.

However, I did not go out to shop for 1 Christmas present - EVERYTHING was delivered thanks to Jet, Amazon, Wal-Mart, Target, Current, Michaels and a bunch of Ebay and Etsy shops (where small business Saturday can be everyday!). We did have 4 Christmas trees this year - Gav had a very small faux tree in his office decorated with beer mug lights & Dr. Who and Eagles ornaments; my faux Frida tree (also small) was on my vanity in the bedroom; the pencil tree (faux) with the 'under the sea' theme was already up in the balcony as we never took it down from Christmas the previous year. We did get a real tree - second biggest in the lot at 9 1/2 feet tall (and extra points for us buying it after a decent sized snow storm!)! So yes, I got into Christmas as long as I didn't have to go out for Christmas. Yes, I was quite a mess and that before I was eliminated!

We did go out for New Year’s Eve – one of two holidays that I normally loathe (the other being valentine’s day) but it was food & fireworks in a friend’s backyard and some games at the kitchen table. Quiet. Subtle. Nice.

Good Friday

I love mornings like this - everything is silent except my fingers on the keyboard. The cats are asleep; Michael is asleep; the day care center is closed today so everything is silent save the sounds of the traffic all the way out on Route 61.

I can actually hear myself think on days like this - I could never really do that in Delaware County.

It is a good Friday!

Moving.....

I have been living in Havertown for 15 years.  In the same apartment. It is a cozy 1 bedroom  and while it is perfect for 1 person who doesn't have a lot of hobbies, it is way too small for two people who work at home and one of them has a lot of hobbies.  So we decided to move.

But - we figured that if we were going to move, we wanted a lot more space that was affordable and we found it...87 miles away in Schuylkill county.

The new place is so cool!! It is an old church built in the 1800's that was first turned into student housing and is now apartment/townhouses. Our new place is so much larger - we will actually be able to have friends over for the weekend! It isn't like we didn't do that before - its just that since we started working from home, there isn't any room for sleepovers.....

Anyway. Moving. 15 years is a lot of time to acquire a lot of sh...stuff and I have a lot of stuff.  Michael travels light, so 99% of all this crap is mine. And its not as if I haven't been getting rid of stuff - We just did a flea market in September and took two car loads of stuff out of there (only 2 small boxes came back) and I have been taken loads of stuff to the Goodwill - but I swear - I think in dark and quiet of night - it procreates and makes more of itself because I can't seem to get ahead of it!  So I keep packing away and tossing away and hoping for the best!

Moving is also expensive whether or not you hire a mover. I'm so freaked out by other people's moving stories that I ditched the idea of movers and instead have been relying on the kindness of friends and family as well as becoming good friends with the U-Haul fellas.  This is why the move is taking 2 weeks instead of one trip. But it's all good - it helps me get rid of stuff (at least that is what I keep telling myself.....)

But this isn't all doom and gloom - I've been having fun deciding where things should go and comparing notes with Mike to see where he thinks things should go, deciding how to set up my office, ordering the new bed and deciding where and how to decorate for Christmas - because I want to be partially unpacked and feel christmasy by the 24th!  S0 much fun is being had by all! :)

Check back in a few weeks for more photos and stories from the move - starting with how I hurt my back basically before we even got started..... ::facepalm::

Out and About on a Saturday

This past Saturday, Mike and I took a drive to Berks County to run some errands, including some non-historic site seeing and stops at Hornings - Bethel and Myerstown! And surprise of all surprises - we didn't visit the farm!

There was some spectacular weather on Saturday:
Picture
We spent a lot of time in the car - something we haven't done since the last vacation week took together (which I think was in 1999?) and we got on each other's nerves after awhile. Luckily he took a nap on the drive home and that helped.

On the way home we stopped for gas and I saw the biggest firetruck I have ever seen!  The one that took me to the hospital after my motorcycle accident wasn't this big and that was a city truck!  See for yourself!
Picture
I couldn't get the whole truck in the photo!  It was super clean, too!

It wasn't the most exciting of days, but it did result in some pretty funny moments and laughter is always a plus!  The KFC for dinner after wasn't bad either!

Home Town Excitement

AQuiet Saturday late afternoon.  My honey is playing his usual shoot 'em up games on his lap top and I'm watching a documentary on Netflix.  I made a pot of chili earlier and I'm thinking I should get up and make either some rice or corn bread to go with it. Quiet. Serene. Pleasant.

As I was getting up from watching the telly, I heard a beeping sound and it was annoying.  I kept asking Blaise about it but he kept saying he didn't hear it.  But as I was putting together the rice to put on the stove - the beeping fire alarm started in our building.

I don't panic when the fire alarm goes off in my building.  I have lived here for 15 years and the fire alarm goes off at least once a year.... usually in the late evening on either a cold and/or rainy night. Statistically speaking, it is usually nothing - someone down at the other end of the T (our building is shaped like a big T - we are all the way at the bottom/back) doing something - so I don't worry about it. Also - every other time in the 15 years that the alarm has gone off - I have gone outside, so this isn't typical behavior for me.

Our fire alarm is hardwired to the fire house and my section of the building is basically behind the fire house, do....  Anyway - I suggested that Blaise take this opportunity to go outside and have a cig and get the gossip.  I stayed inside - I had 2 candles burning and a pot of rice on the stove! I also have two geriatric cats that would need rounding up if there was a fire so better to stay in then run out. Ok - I'll admit it - I was still in my PJs and I wasn't going out there unless there was a damn good reason.

Then the alarm at the firehouse went off.  So I snuffed the candles and put on something I could go outside wearing (it pays to be prepared) and then took this neat photo of the fire truck when it pulled up outside my end of the building (first time in 15 years!! Usually they pull up at the T).
Picture
So there was some running in and out of the building by fireman, but the alarm had gone off and I never saw or smelled any smoke or fire.  It was all over in about 10  minutes!

Blaise came back in but didn't have much in the way of gossip. Disappointing.

Either way - everyone is ok and I don't think there was any property damaged.  I'm still not sure if anything actually happened!

But at this point, I want to take a moment to thank our local Fire Department.  Where we live, we depend on volunteer fire departments - so its our neighbors who don their gear and come out  to look after us.  I'm very glad this was pretty much nothing and none of them were put in a dangerous position.

If you live in an area that depends on volunteer fire departments - don't pass up the opportunity to say things by participating in one of their fund raisers.  Its how they keep geared up for our safety!

Well - the rice is finished - so time for dinner!

Have a good evening everyone!

Blaise's Garden

My honey shared my Da's garden this year.  Between the two of them they grew 3 kinds of tomatoes, cucumbers, 2 kinds of bell peppers, squash, watermelon, 3 kinds of chili peppers, Indian corn (for decoration) and a small selection of herbs.  My contribution was the flowers to entice the pollinating insects and birds.  It was a wonderful experience!  I'll let the photographs speak for themselves!

May Day!

So Michael has decided to try the garden!  I'm feeling good about it!  My contribution has been lots of seeds - mostly flower seeds - mostly to feed the honey bees (and other pollinating insects) but also to look pretty.  Experts say that having lots of honey bees around your garden pollinating the veggie plants means you get bigger fruits & veggies! I'll report back on that at the end of the season!

Because he likes hot food, I got him a selection of pepper seeds from Sandia Seed Company located in New Mexico!
Picture
When we lived in New Mexico, we both developed a taste for good chiles/chile sauces - not the kind most prevalent on the east coast that are vinegar-based products but delicious chiles with fantastic flavor you can enjoy at varying levels of heat.  Most people think that red chile sauces are all hot and green are all mild but that isn't in the case.  I learned in NM that color doesn't matter and heat varies from batch to batch, so if you are ordering food with chile sauce and you want to be sure to get some hot, you better order 'christmas' (think red AND green).

So Michael started the seeds in those little starter pots - not just the peppers, but some tomatoes and zucchini, too.  I hope to pick up some herbs from a nursery close to Windy Knolls - I'm thinking basil and oregano (since they seem to be Mike's favorites) and parsley;  Mike mentioned mint, too.  I'd really like to try growing rue, which isn't common at nurseries, but I'm pretty sure I can find starter plants on the internet.

It isn't a whole lot, but its a great place to start!  It will feel good to play in the dirt this summer - I just have to remember my sun block!
