The Friday Kahlo Denim Jacket

I had a favorite old denim jacket that needed to be uplifted.  I decided to make a new back piece for the jacket (as you can see in the photo) and it was not too difficult.

First I went through all my 'Frida' fabrics and pulled everything that interested me.  Then I carefully cut each piece so it fitted into a collage that I liked. Then each piece of fabric was carefully ironed and using fusible web, ironed onto a piece of backing fabric. Then I sewed a piece of wide grosgrain ribbon around all 4 sides as binding.  Then I carefully sewed the piece to the jacket through the binding only.  This will allow me to easily remove the piece if I ever wanted to do so.

One thing to remember - fusible web doesn't always create a firm, permanent connection between fabrics so you might want to go back over and tack down corners or edges or sew over each piece using invisible thread.

On the flaps on the front pockets of the jacket (not pictured) I sewed on beads, charms and added a few Frida Kahlo buttons and sewed on a large sugar skull patch at the bottom on one side to keep the theme going.

Something to keep in mind:  because this was created with fusible web, I can't just throw it into the washing machine - it will need to be either dry cleaned or spot cleaned.

This is a really fun piece to wear and it really feels great to walk around with art on your back - (basically like a tattoo, but not) and knowing it is your own creation
